Knowledge Transition

  • Hi All,

I will be takeing up a new project from an existing vendor for a client. I would like to know what are the points i need to ask the outgoing vendor for a good seamless Knowledge transition.

This technology is SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS.

I have built upon some questions

    Understanding of the Project

    Complete architecure of project

    Dependencies

    Access to the

    Database (DEV, QA and PROD)

SQL Agent (Is there any other Agent to trigger the jobs that is being used)

Issues faced with action taken (Book Of Knowledge),

    Application running on the server

    Daily task on the server.

Is SSIS, SSRS and SSAS running from different machines/servers

    -past history of critical issues

-ports used by applications and processes

    -location of all the applications

    -passwords

    -level of auditing and security

-any customization that is out of norm etc.

    SSIS

What are the variety of sources being used?

    SSIS version being used

Are there any 3rd party components (RedGate, etc) being used?

What are the Exception handling being used and is there any log tables maintained?

Are E-mails sent to the customer/client ion case of Job failure

Are E-Mails Plain text/HTML (detailed error) or a link to the table being sent to the customer/support team

Are the packages deployed based on Database or File systems

    Reports

What is the source data for your reports?

Are you reporting off one database or many databases?

Is anyone using personal data providers (like local Excel spreadsheets)?

Has the data been processed for reporting

i.e., is it a data warehouse/data mart environment or

just a copy of a transactional system)?

Are there any specialized views that have been created just for reporting?

How often is the data refreshed?

How many reports are in Production? Can you describe these reports?

What are the Types of reports used?

What is the purpose of each report?

Who are the intended users of each report?

Any complicated logic or formatting involved in these reports?

At any point in time what are the number of users accessing the reports

Do you use Broadcast Agent (or Publisher) to schedule reports?

If so, what reports are scheduled and how often do they run?

Do your users have ad hoc reports being created by the customer

    Do we use Report models

Can anyone think of any more questions to have a smooth knowledge Transition?

Your help and suggestions is greatly appreciated

    Arvind

  • What kind of things have gone wrong with this so far?

What kind of things do users have attention on? What do they ask about? What do they like?

Were there difficulties during initial deployment? During any upgrades/enhancements?
