EventID: 17055 with Description 18272: I/O error on backup or restore restart-checkpoint file

  • HI All,

I am installing a Johnson Controls Metasys Program onto a system that has MSDE with SP3.  The OS is Windows 2000 currently with SP3 as well, since it looks for the version of many pieces of software and if they are not exactly it says , you need xxx.

When installing the SCT or the ADX (the last pieces to install and the main programs)  it goes thru the install and the error in the GUI with a XPPKInitconsole.exe "Common Language Runtime Debugging Services" error, but the install continues and says completed successfully.   Just before that error comes up on the GUI it is stating that it is Restoring Security settings (most likely in the SQL Database).     In the Application Event log about 30-40 seconds before the application Pop-Up window, I get multiple

    Event Type: Error

    Event Source: MSSQLSERVER

    Event Category: (2)

    Event ID: 17055

    Date: 4/26/2005

    Time: 11:44:01 AM

    User: XXXXX\XXXXX

    Computer: XXXXX

    Description:

    18272 :

I/O error on backup or restore restart-checkpoint file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\backup\MetasysIII.ckp'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). The statement is proceeding but is non-restartable.

Where the User is actually the Default Built-IN Administrator account renamed of course.

I have seen many places where it said that you need to create a backup directory there so I have done that and same problem.   I never see any files showing up in there during the install, which I have a window opened to that directory in the background during the installation.

    Thanks,

    Steven Stuart

  • I had the very similar problem yesterday, and I found that the directory path that that it's referring to, may not exist.   You may need to create it.  But why it happens, I don't know yet.. still researching.

    Kindest Regards,

    TH

  • The path does exist at this point minus the "*.ckp" file.   I also even gave the everyone group Full permissions, and the Administrators already had that.   Hmmm.   However, I just thought of something.  The System account is not listed.   I will try adding that.

    Thanks,

    Steven Stuart

  • HI All,

Adding the System ID with Full Control (with the backup directory I had already created) solved the 17055 error.    The GUI error did not get fixed by this, and after completely opening up the Default Web Site, and adding the MSADC virtual Directory, this error went away, and installed fine.

Now I am getting a login error, but it appears to not even be making it to the SQL Server database yet, so I am trying to fix this next portion.   However, this issue is closed.   Hopefully, this will help others in the future.

    Thanks,

    Steven Stuart

  • I have the same error when i get to initializing security, what are the steps you followed?

  • Hi ggobiecki,

We have since moved to a different version of the Metatsys program. However, the majority of these types of problems are going to be either permission related on the IIS server or Java related on the client side. Some of these issues are based on the coding of the application as well, and the application expects it to be installed in a certain location and with a certain URL based on the servername. So sometimes Company security practices can cause problems. Hopefully, if this is your problem your vendor will be more helpful.

    Thanks,

    Steven Stuart
