Windows installer and Profile blues

  • while working through a new book about power query I came to learn that Windows Installer wasn't working because I couldn't install the latest build. Thinking I could get it to run under a different profile, I logged out as me and logged in as admin. Windows explorer would not even show me the object explorer tree, so I couldn't try to run the power query update as admin either.

When I tried to run the install, it looks great until the end when it says Windows Installer has stopped working and do I want to debug or cancel. Trying to start Excel suddenly produced a message that there was inadequate diskspace and memory. I had 800 GB free and 28 of 32 MB ram free at the time, but Book1 never showed.

So in trying to determine what was up with the installer, I went back to Cortana, typed Services in the Cortana box and got a blank MMC with Services in the upper left corner but blanks everywhere else. So I typed Event and got the same thing...so I then navigated to the start menu and there was nothing under the initial menu.... Same thing with Edge, a white screen with nothing in it. the machine had become totally unresponsive.

I rebooted the machine and created a new Administrator profile and moved my old content under Users\Me folder by folder into the new Administrator profile. Lots of things got fixed, Start Menu is back, Desktop and Toolbar icons are back and Excel runs, but I still cant get power query to update because it still dies on the installer error.

Excel is 2013 stand alone 32 bit running on Windows 10. I had successfully applied pq updates twelve times in the past, but came to notice that Windows Update also failed to complete the last two days.

So my question is, what do I do with the old profile and do you think renaming it or deleting it will make Windows Installer work again, so Windows Update runs without incident, and I can get back to learning power query?

    thanks for bearing with me
