I couldn't agree more! Storing XML into a varchar field in a database is a waste of space. Wait until you have someone start storing whole programs in in XML into a blob field! woohoo! We're having fun now! I've worked on a system that did such a thing which cause a database to grow to over 100 gigs in size causing the customer to upgrade his hardware after one month of use! I never have been able to see the justification of using XML in this way. I always though of XML being used for Web services etc... and even then didn't think it was a secure way of doing that even. I'm old school and believe in encryption and binary data storage.
