SQL 2014 Upgrade Advisor Issue - Requested registry access is not allowed

  • Hi All,

While running Sql 2014 upgrade advisor against a 2005 remote sql server. Below is the error im getting:

"Could not populate SQL Instances: System.Security.SecurityException: Requested registry access is not allowed"

Its able to connect SQL 2005 DB server and its also populating all the required Databases, but when i'm tring to click Run at the last step above error is coming. I even installed SQL 2012 upgrade advisor in my system and getting the same above error.

However if i use SQL 2008 upgrade advisor and connect to SQL 2005 server im not getting any error. The tool is generating successfully all the Pre and Post upgrade issues.

Please help me in identifying the issue.I'm running the tool with Run as administrator option.

Is there any specific change i need to do in my system so that the tool runs successfuly.

    Thanks in advance

  • You can't upgrade from 2005 to 2012 or above. You will have to go to 2008 first, and then to 2014.

Edit: It appears you can go to 2012 from 2005 but not 2014. You will need to restore your databases to a 2008 or 2012 server, and increase the compatibility level, and then you can back them up and restore to a 2014 server. I'm a pretty new DBA but we just upgraded to 2014 from 2000, and we did a side by side upgrade to 2008 and then to 2014. I wouldn't personally attempt an in place upgrade from 2005.

  • Hi,

I'm just trying to run SQL upgrade advisor against 2005 SQl server Database to get all the known issues before i go for actual upgrade.

I just wanted to know why its throwing above error in 2012 and 2014 upgrade advisor but not in 2008 version

    Thanks

  • I got the same error. However, the Upgrade Advisor ran successfully when I ran it as an administrator.

You can't upgrade from 2005 to 2012 or above. You will have to go to 2008 first, and then to 2014.

This is incorrect. You can do an in-place from 2005 SP4 to 2014. Just not SP3 or lower.

You can do a full migration just fine from 2005SP3 to 2014. I actually did this a few months ago. Backup and restore works just fine, no issues. You just can't do in-place.

To be honest, if you're still on 2005, it's a much wiser decision to upgrade your Windows Server platform and hardware anyways, especially if you plan to leverage AlwaysOn AGs, which work beautifully on Windows Server 2012R2.
