Lost a database out of DPM

  • So our SharePoint admin recreated a couple of db's in the farm, including the profile. This caused users to lose things out of SP, so he asked me to restore it from DPM.

    We're using version 2010.

In the meantime, I noticed the protection group for the app db's on the SharePoint server had been failing, so I moved the 3 failing Db's to 'inactive protection' then reconfigured the protection group for the 3 new ones created from the Admin's config utility. Protection group is happy now, backups are resuming.

When I attempted to restore the inactive Db, which no longer existed on the SharePoint db instance from the inactive protection group, I was not able too.

I ended up trying to recreate a blank version of the one I was trying to restore and re-add the inactive database back into the protection group. This caused DPM to lose every recovery point that had been in the inactive database and remove it from the inactive protection group. Basically DPM ate it.

I can't figure out exactly what I did wrong with this scenario. Is it possible to restore to a recovery point from a database in an inactive protection group? I'm wondering if in the future I should have DPM restore the 'inactive' to disk first somewhere else before I mark it inactive.
