SQL Server 2008 R2 Updating to SP3 takes too long.

  • Hi folks,

We are patching and updating a handful of our SQL servers to SP3, At the moment but we encounter extreme slowness during the process.

In total it took 4 hours to complete the patch and we got a lot more servers lining up.

We notice some of our servers took significantly less time, abour 30mins. The difference between these and the slow ones are the GPOs. The slow ones are hardened by our server admin.

We temporary removed the GPO and it works like a charm, 30 mins. however our can't just remove the GPO for our front facing productive servers.

We've check and found 3 local policies from this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2000257

Local Policy Object Display Name User Right

    Backup files and directories SeBackupPrivilege

    Debug Programs SeDebugPrivilege

Manage auditing and security log SeSecurityPrivilege

However this is not helpful after the GPO's been modified.

Anyone know if there's a whitelist, docs, best practice of SQL server on what local policy (sec or user rights) we should tweak to allow the upgrade to run smoothly without issues?

    Thanks a bunch!
