    the only issue you should find is the run command shortcut 'ssms' will always open the 2012 instance of ssms rather than 2014.

    I usually start afresh (if i can) and install everything backwards - 2014 then 2012 and so on using the higher shared features and only the dbengine from the lower versions.

  • I could think of a couple of reasons.

    Features that change or are no longer supported with different versions of SSMS.

    Needing to managed maintenance plans on instances with different versions.

    There could be more, but those are the main ones I can think of.

  • Yes, if you manage multiple versions you really need the different version Mgt Studios. There are some things you do that just don't work in the wrong version of Mgt Studio
