Backing up databases to a data domain (dedupe)

  • Hi,

We have two data domains for backing up SQL Databases. On one of them we backup with compression, and on the other we do not use compression. Now our systems guys are telling us not use compression since the data domain has this built in. However the DBA's and Systems have been going back and forth on this because the compressed backups take about half the time, create smaller files and restore faster. We the DBA's are having trouble seeing the benefit of not compressing the backups. We have a server taking 10+ hours for full backups which does not include diffs and logs. Compressing these databases would cut the time in half.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Am I missing something? I didn't find much online about this specifically besides a post from Brent Ozar recommending that you don't use a data domain with sql backups.
