If Celko was a rock star, which one would he be?

  • SSC and the community in general abound with rock star personality types. We, the less well known and worthy, know who they are and they are certainly aware of one another’s status.

Regarding Joe and giving myself first crack at it, I think I’d go for Mick Jagger. While highly respected, credentialed, and having more than a few miles on him, Mick doesn’t always display what you might call a pleasant countenance. While I’ve yet to see Joe comment on what barn animals my parents may have had sex with, I’ve experienced personal a dressing-down or two from him over the years and seen others suffer far worse at his hands. And when he does attack, you don’t see much coming from him that would read like an apology. No apparent regrets coming from the man because the recipient evidently had it coming.

Anyway, Mick would be the closest to Joe that I can imagine.

  • I would think of Ozzy Osbourne. They're both precursors on their genres (SQL & heavy metal) and they appear to be more frightening than they really are. They both have current success in their careers but their golden age is gone.

Hi Luis. Ozzy was actually one of the first that came to mind and your points are dead on. I tend to think of Ozzy's nastiness a part of a cultivated persona whereas good old Mick seems to truly lack empathy. Don't know if it was beat out of him or he never had it.

  • I've been told that Celko's personality in the forums isn't at all his real self. It's just a persona created to make people learn.

  • I've read positive comments about his personality on the forums as well. I just couldn't treat people like he does and still sleep at night. I was hoping to create a thread where people might have a little fun with this. I must just be fanning his egotistical flames though...

  • Rick Astley.

every time i see a Celko post, i get a bit PO'd like I've been rick rolled.

Had to do a little research to find out what that meant. Still laughing 🙂

Yes, Joe does have a way of redirecting the issue away from the original OP's. All about what's important to him (or his book sales).

Oh and here I was thinking of Ozzy because of the whole biting the heads off of chickens and non ANSI SQL syntax users :hehe:

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Joe is definitely Keith Richards.

“The select's easy, but the join is another thing...”

But I'm not here just to write books and make money. I'm here to say something and to touch other people, sometimes in a cry of desperation: "Do you know this clause?”

I don't know how to cope with JC in the forums. Outside of forums, in personal email, he's pleasant and helpful. In forums, he's (a) unbelievably offensive and (b) so busy filling his posts with vicious insults that the good and useful content which they usually contain as well as the rest is totally obscured. He and I have had the odd run-in in the forums, and after enough insults in both directions he goes reasonable - once he's interested in the technical argument that's what he concentrates on. I tend to be a bit excessive responding to something he's writeen at times, but I know that's not sensible.

Anyway, I think he's trying to be a Georges Brassens rather than a Keith Richards. But what he succedes in being is a Jonathan Ross (not any sort of rock or pop star).

Um, it was BATS. You really need to read up on your rock-n-roll LORE "Standards" :hehe:

  • Can't picture Celko as a rock star... I'm going off book and saying a cross between Anton LeVey and Ming the Merciless...

  • Just picked up from The Thread that old Joe has been banned from SSC. Have to admit I have mixed feelings about that.

On some level I always suspected his rants were an act, that he did them solely to draw attention to himself and his books but this ban appears to validate the idea that there was a genuine personality issue that didn’t fit with the culture of the community. In other words, he couldn’t help himself. “As ye sow…”

  • I'm going to go with Jim Morrison seeing that he's been banned from another Venue.

"I cant stress enough the importance of switching from a sequential files mindset to set-based thinking. After you make the switch, you can spend your time tuning and optimizing your queries instead of maintaining lengthy, poor-performing code."
