Windows Defrag task on SQL VM with SAN

  • We recently virtualized a physical Win 2008,SQL 2005 server to VMWare with HP SAN backend, using SSD for 1st tier storage

The default Windows Defrag scheduled task (system32\defrag.exe -c) is scheduled to run each night.

We also have database index maintenance running.

    1. Will defrag even work on open/locked files like .mdf ? Or does SQL need to be stopped ?

    2. Is defrag required on SQL servers ? Is defrag useful with a SSD backend ?

    3. Do any of your SQL servers have defrag task running ? Does it cause any issues?
