mirroring/log shipping tx log file size

  • So our pseudo-dba quit and left me (the new guy) holding the bag. I'm no dba, and we need to do something. What I have is a 2008R2 mirrored setup with log shipping to a coop site (where there is another mirror).

My log file is ~10GB and according to the guys here, it has never been truncated or shrunk. I'd like to be able to shrink that file, as we're running out of disk and I don't want to request more space from our host.

When is the appropriate time to shrink and/or truncate that log file?

    Thanks.

  • why would you want to shrink the log for it just to grow again?

Find out whats causing the log growth first, is the mirror session synchronised or are you storing transactions that haven't yet been sen tot the mirror, there are so many factors to consider.

bad advice from these people I'd say, don't go shrinking your log just yet. If it needs to be that big then request more space.

  • Fair enough, thank you.
