SQL Error Log Size

  • Hi Experts,

What is the default size of SQL error log ? How can i find the current size of SQL Server log and how can i modify it?

    TIA

  • Hi,

As to my knowledge there is no defined size of SQL Server Error Log file. Sql Server will keep on using the same file until the server is restarted or sp_cycle_errorlog is called.

I have done the following two things to manage the log file in my server:

    1. Made a Job which is scheduled daily to execute sp_cycle_errorlog to change to the next file.

    2. Changed the maximum number of error log files to 99. (so as to hold log worth 99 days)

  • Yeah, it just grows. There isn't a default size. Best to follow an approach similar to what Shafat suggests above.
