Best practices for sharing inhouse data with a web portal

  • Hi,

At my work we host the main databases in-house but we have a requirement to present data on an online portal. The data needs to be as close to real time and is editable on the portal and needs to feed back to the in-house database.

Currently we do this using transactional replication with updateable subscriptions and the agents run constantly. We have had numerous occasions in the last year where the publications just stop working or crash and the only solution each time seems to be to reinitialize the data which takes hours and means taking the portal offline each time.

I am wondering if its common practice to just have the web services point directly at our in-house database or whether other companies/DBAs use another solution entirely?

We are also looking into formally implementing a HA/DR solution and the idea of having to setup replication again from the DR location doesn't really appeal and sounds like it will take a very long time.

I would appreciate any advice or comments about your own companies setups.

    Regards

    John
