Two Days Off

  • Aw shucks! You mean the Cloud isn't the universal panacea? Who would have thought it 😉

There are probably going to be some red faces among Verizon's customers as they explain to their customers and senior management that, due to circumstances beyond their control.......

  • This is just another chapter in my forthcoming and growing book to be titled 'Do We Really Need To Do This Sh!t?'. Trouble is, I keep adding so many chapters I'll never get it published.

    Disaster Recovery = Backup ( Backup ( Your Backup ) )

  • This is so unbelievable that my first thought was that it must be a hoax! An Enterprise cloud service with a 48h downtime? These guys must be kidding...

But the support-guy at the other end of the Verizon cloud website-live-chat just confirmed that it is not a joke.

  • I would expect a Cloud implementation to be highly resilient. The technology for highly resilient infrastructure has been around for years. You can get any level of availability you want, at a price. That said, I would expect maintenance to be performed without service interruption by making use of those resilience facilities.

Even if you are completely replacing the infrastructure, it should not take 2 days to cut over to the new systems. I can't even imagine what their infrastructure looks like to need such an outage.

  • Hey c'mon guys, give them a break! It's only some old websites, no-one died 🙂

  • The 2 days should be a good motivation to move all the stuff to another cloud-service and never look back... 😉

Just got a business-idea: The meta-cloud! :-)) A cloud-cloud service so to say. Load-balance the stuff transparently on different cloud-services. Just one layer of abstraction on top.

    I like it!!

    An Intercloud?

  • I have had concerns about storage as a service for some time. I remember doing technical sales of Microsoft CRM against SalesForce.com years ago. My primary selling point from a technical standpoint was someone else owned your data. This 48 hour downtime is a classic example of the problems I foresaw then. How many small businesses using Verizon's cloud will lose sales because of this scheduled down time? Verizon's scheduled downtime is just the tip of the iceberg; it shows you cannot trust third party vendors with your data. The hack of Apple's cloud is an additional point of reference to the disaster we call the cloud.

Hardware is no longer as expensive as it once was. Much of the necessary software is readily available either as open source or through Microsoft or Oracle. Value Added Resellers (VARs) offer consulting services that ameliorate the cost of full time support resources. Enterprise organizations should make the investment in the hardware and software they need to maintain their data independently.

  • "There's a sucker born every minute."

-- Most likely by David Hannum, in criticism of both P.T. Barnum and his customers.

The proof is Verizon's cloud customer list.

  • First: Ouch.

Second: I'm trying to wrap my head around what kind of maintenance could possibly require a 48-hour downtime, and even then, there's no high availability architecture in place?

I'm certain they're not expecting it to take that long, but still...

  • I've always been against cloud storage. I hate losing control of my data.

    Same here.

I would LOVE to have a 48 hour outage of every system. Imagine how much maintenance that could be done! We have a hard time convincing folks here to have one more hour in our monthly outage for maintenance when we do things to our store facing systems.

  • If it goes down ever it is not a "cloud" service it is a remote service.

Cloud services are always on and should be redundant.

Verizon redefines the standard to match their inability to provide technology again.
