SSRS - The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion

  • While restarting the SQL server reporting services i am getting the error message The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion .

    After doing a little research i figured out that Usually this issue is caused when Reporting Services tries to communicate over the internet to access the latest list of Trusted and Untrusted certificates.

    I could figure out the two possible solutions to the issue :

    1) I could also resolve the issue by increase the Service Timeout period (incase its taking a little longer than the default time of 30 sec ) .

    2) Update the Reporting Services configuration to bypass certificate checking .

    But the second approach kills the whole purpose of certificate checking so i guess this would not be a recommended approach for a Production server .

    I am not aware of the process of this certificate checking or how it works. Whatever i could find related to it seems to be a little above my understanding .

    Hence can someone please explain the purpose and process of this certification checking in simple terms and if there is any other approach to go about the issue.
