How do I download the SQL Server 2014 Install Files?

  • So, management wants to begin upgrading to SQL 2014, and as part of that, they have asked me to do an in-place upgrade in our QA environment.

Unfortunately, I can't even figure out how to download the install files. I don't want to "try out" SQL Server Express, and I don't want to install the trial version. How do I get the actual installation files for SQL 2014 Enterprise edition (or even Standard edition)?

  • How are you licensing SQL Server?

If you want to (legally) download anything but freeware/trialware, then you'll need access an account with Microsoft that includes download rights, such as an MSDN Subscriber account, or the accounts that are part of an Enterprise or Volume License Agreement. An EA or a VLA is a non-trivial agreement ($$$), so you ought to be able to get to an admin in your company if you have one of these agreements.

Loosely put, the answer is 'the same place you get the rest of your Microsoft install media': Windows, Exchange, SQL Server, Office, SCOM, BOB. If you're on an Enterprise or Volume Agreement, then you download the .iso file from the same place you get the rest of your MS software. There are different methods for different Enterprise/Volume/Developer Agreement levels. You'll need the login credentials for your company's corporate account, which will get you to the appropriate set of downloads.

If your organization doesn't have Software Assurance on the licenses on those servers, then upgrade = buy new licenses. Install media, or links to it, will be included with that purchase.
