SQL Server 2012 Installation & Environment - Are there Alternatives for an Environment

  • Hello Everyone,

I am just starting out to learn more about SQL Server 2012 and I was wondering what is the best way for me to learn the program.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out how I can use SQL Server 2012 to the fullest without actually buying the software. I know I have options by getting the Express edition, but the problem with that is limitations on features. I want to learn every aspect of SQL Server so the limitations is something I'm trying to avoid.

Would it be possible to use all the features if I was to subscribe to a web hosting company that offers SQL Server 2012? If not what options are there if any?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  • There are a few options. If you have access to MSDN at work, get a developer copy through that. Or, if you have MSDN at work, hook up your Azure subscription that comes with MSDN and then set up Azure VMs running SQL Server. Next best bet, spend the $50 it takes to buy the developer edition of SQL Server. It's a pretty trivial investment if you get a job from it. Other than that, there are very few free or near free options. Almost everything costs something. Microsoft Learning has some online courses that include temporary access to an instance through the labs.

  • There is also the Enterprise Evaluation Edition. The license lasts 180 days and it is free.

After the evaluation period, you can decide whether you want to buy the Developer Edition (the feature set is the same as Enterprise)
