Anyone know of any real-world case studies on virtualizing SQL Server using vSphere/VMWare?

  • I'm only large-ish project (not in production yet) that was originally planning on running our OLTP and Reporting database servers on bare metal blades. However, we've started looking into the idea of adding these blades to our vSphere pool and virtualizing the database instances instead. We've checked out all the whitesheets, guidelines, best practices, etc., and we're pretty satisfied with the trade off, but our CTO has asked us to provide at least 3 testimonials of similarly-sized projects that have successfully implemented SQL Server 2008R2 (or 2012) on vSphere 5.0 (or 5.5). Perhaps my googling skills suck, but I was only able to find one example (http://houseofbrick.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/hobsqlservercasestudy.pdf). Does anyone know of any other such case studies/testimonials?

  • Here is a bunch.

If you reach out to VMWare, they should be able to provide you with plenty of resources / testimonials as well.

  • Thanks. I've already got a request in to VMWare for such testimonials. From the links provided by the search result, which would you say is a real-world testimonial? I see a couple of white papers that are effectively VMWare setting up test scenarios, but nothing concrete. Sorry, I've just done a lot of reading today and haven't found much for it.
