SQL Server 2014 Mangement Studio compatibility

  • Hi,

I have a 2 part question that I am struggling to fnd information on.

    1. Is SQL Server 2014 Management Studio backward compatible for managing 2012 and 2008 R2 databases or is it a case of 'it depends what you want to do'.

    2. Can we install SQL Server 2014 Manamgent Studio on a client machine along side SQL Server 2012 MS or 2008 R2 MS.

    Any information greatfully received,

    Regards,

    Gary.

    Kindest Regards,

    Mr B

  • 1. Yes, you can use 2014 Management Studio 2014 for older databases. I do it all the time. It's just not advisable the other way round.

    2. Yes, I have 2012 and 2014 on my PC at the moment. (No reason other than laziness :-D. Your post has reminded me that I need to uninstall the 2012 version, actually.)

  • Hi Gary,

    1. You can use SSMS 2014 to manage 2012 & 2008 R2 instances but I have had some problems connecting to 2005 instances.

    2. I've got SSMS 2014 on my local machine alongside SSMS 2012

  • 'It depends on what you want to do' for SSMS. Remember, database compatibility mode can be a restriction.

Also, you would not be able to use the new 2014 features (like backing up to a URL).

99% of everything should work though.

  • Is it possible to connect to SQL2014 from SQL2012 SSMS ?

Before our central management server had been upgraded to SQL2012, I used to be able to connected to SQL2012 from SQL2008R2 SSMS management server.
