Multiple Server Licensing

  • Hi

hoping this is the correct place for this post...

We are upgrading to 2012 and will have 2 instances on different physical servers (both standard edition). One will be the production server and the other will be for data warehousing and BI.

Can one user CAL or development CAL be used for both instances?

I have read this on the SQL Server Licensing Datasheet which suggests it's ok. Have I misunderstood?

Each SQL Server CAL allows access to multiple licensed SQL Servers, including Business Intelligence Edition, Standard Edition and legacy Enterprise Edition Servers

    Thanks

As with all things licensing, don't take the public forum as the answer, please go and speak to Microsoft directly or your reseller and ensure you have a written transcript

From what I understand yes you are correct, that one user or one device CAL can be used to access multiple servers. The only exception to this would be when you are not able to justify the amount of people who can be accessing the databases, for example from a website etc, in which case it has to be done on a per core basis.
