Columnstore and In-memory will not play with Replication

  • A few months back I raised some Connect items requesting that Transactional Replication is enhanced in a future version of SQL Server to allow replication of Columnstore and In-Memory objects. I also asked that Columnstore indexes could be used within an Indexed View.

These have now all been closed as "Won't Fix". This means that we should not expect any enhancements to replication in these areas.

In my opinion it also means that organisations should be planning their exit strategy if they are using transactional replication of any form. This may mean a move to the Attunity product line (www.attunity.com), or more likely a move to Availability Groups.

For many people this news merely confirms what has been implicitly understood from the SQL 2014 release, but for others this may be more important for their future plans.

The relevant Connect items are listed below, you need to sign in to Connect to see the details:

807668 Allow the use of Columnstore indexes with Transactional Replication

807667 Allow use of Columnstore index with Indexed View

807670 Allow use of Memory-Optimised tables with transactional replication
