SQL Server Installation Media

  • Hi All,

I have a licensed copy of SQL 2005 Standard 32-bit which was purchased some years ago. The server it was installed on is no longer in use so we would like to use the license from this to install on another server.

I have read that a license is for use on 32-bit and 64-bit machines, and would like to install it on a 64-bit server. The only problem is I do not have the installation CDs/DVDs for 64-bit as the original ones are 32-bit.

How do I obtain 64-bit installation media without having to purchase a new license?

I have MSDN access so could download the right version but I presume this is not intended for a live system, only dev/test systems?

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Gary.

  • You can download it from MSDN as long as you get the standard edition. It isn't a different version from the one on the installation media (expect that you can have the SPs already slipstreamed in).

As far as licenses go I'm not sure what the ramifications are of changing to a different server and installing a different version (64-bit).
