Changing the SQL Server license key

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 with SP2 on WIndows 2008 R2

Recently, i have installed a SQL Instance (2008R2 Standard edition x64) on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Now my manager wants me to change the SQL license key for this instance. The new key he is providing is also for SQL 2008 R2 standard edition x64.

Can i change the SQL license key via the "Edition Upgrade" option under "Maintenance"? Please note that we just want to change the license key and do not want any edition upgrade or changes? Is this possible? If not, is there any other way to change the key without having to reinstall?

    Thanks,

    Ravi

  • Not sure why you would want to change a working key which has been already licensed...As long as you've purchased license(it's just paper work) to use standard eiditon you should be good. (Please double check with msft by calling them).

Also, as far as I know you can't simply change the key without going through setup process(I might be wrong as I was never in this situation). Refer to this for what's the response from MSFT on SQL 2005.

And of course....If you've time, you can test it in one of your POC servers(Once testing is done, uninstall SQL)
