Make their jobs run more efficitely due to the systems being up and running according to clients and endusers schedule.

The biggest business challenge they are faced with solving is purely from an operational perspective. They need these DBAs in order to maintain the level of performance that the system requires in order to run smoothly and correctly. They are a 24 x 7 operations and each release needs to meet deadlines that the customer has place on their applications. Each release is different in regards to timelines and there is no standard SLA.

Making sure their group is maintaining the integrity of the production servers in order to maintain optimal performance is their mission critical task. This position was created for a backfill. This backfill will put them at the right amount of head count in order to run their operations effectively.

  • <insert curse words here>

Do I also have to sweep the floors, clean the toilet and maintain the stock portfolio?

That's a rather insane list of requirements. They better be paying well into six figures.

  • Seriously, how many people on the planet have DTS experience with databases greater than 100tb? I mean, how many DBAs have experience at greater than 100tb, period, full stop? They better be paying really, really, high six figures.

  • Requirement 19 confirmed my suspicions. This is a team lead position. You need to understand and be able to do all these things b/c they expect you to delegate but, from time to time, you may have to get your hands dirty. This is a position for someone who wants to switch between management and technical hats quite regularly. I'd suspect it does in fact pay well into 6 figures as others have suggested.

    At least, that's my 2 cents 😉

Could be. I don't think so though. I think it's a technical lead position. It's what I did at my last company, although I didn't do or know that insane list of topics.

  • Ask them what they really need the most. Judging from the required skills list, they're probably most interested in VLDB administration and DR, and some of the rest of it could be learned on-the-job, if it's even needed. VLDB admin is a rare enough skillset that it's probably the key to the whole thing.

As Grant mentioned, if they really do need one of the (estimated) three people on the planet who actually have all of the skills they are looking for, they better be willing to pay (and perk and benefit) in a big way for all of that. Anyone with all of those skills can pretty much demand whatever they want from an employer, because if you won't pay it, someone else will.

Other than the VLDB requirements, it looks like the usual shopping list. I'm surprised it doesn't seem to mention a degree being required.

  • I've seen worse. In addition to most of that job description, I've seen additional requirements for concurrent experience and responsibilities for:

    1. Cisco router and switch admin

    2. VMWare admin

    3. Windows Server admin

    4. Network admin

    5. Security admin

    6. Exchange Server admin

...and more, all in the same job description.

These types of jobs are truly 24x7 - for you, the prospective employee. You should plan on giving up sleep or having a life. Even if they pay well, your employer will expect to own you.

I know times are hard and employers are squeezing employees for more productivity but some of the job descriptions seem to be approaching the lunatic fringe.

  • I saw an advert for a contract here in the UK only last week and the agency stated

Must have 5+ years experience on SQL Server 2008 R2

Now, remind me, what was the release date for SQL Server 2008 R2? 😉

The problem is, the agencies nowadays don't have a clue about the positions they are recruiting for and throw in as many "buzz" words as possible. In fact, I would look at the Brandie's advert and feel for sure that it isn't a real job, same as the one i spotted, they're fishing for CVs so they can go contact your former employers touting for work 😎

That happened when SQL 2000 was released. And when 2005 was released. And there were a lot of "paper certs" applying for those jobs who claimed to have 10+ years in a software that was only 2 years old.

  • I saw a job advert a few months ago demending experience with PowerView. That piece of software was just released a few weeks on the market. So they probably wanted someone from the development team or an MVP 😀
