Where Do You Park?

  • I regularly work at two offices, and in both places I park in a position where I know I can get back out easily without having to make more than a single reversing manoeuvre! I don't usually have a problem with someone else taking "my" spot because there isn't usually anyone else in at my usual starting time of 7:15am... 😀

  • Since I work in downtown area of the city local policy declares that maximum allowed time to park is 2 hours/per day. If you brake the rule penalty is very high so as a job perk we have private parking lot. Places in this lot are numarated so everyone know whoise space it is.

Al previous locaction i looked for firs available lot that didn't require a lot of manuvering when reversion out from parking lot. This was very important requirement since driving/parking culture in Croatia isn't very good so on ocasions it can happen that someone block your way out and you are stuck until next day 🙁

  • I park about a 20 minute walk from the office - why? To avoid punitive parking charges of approximately £130 per month! And it gives me a little exercise twice a day, and chance to catch up on my favourite podcasts. (SGU for one)

  • Back in the days B.T. (Before Telecommuting) I parked my motorcycle in the garage, in the half-stall left when they added the Handicapped spaces. Occasionally I would find it in use by the building maintenance staff, and have to park in a "triangle" spot. Everyone at work knew it was "my spot" and would comment on the "new" bike there when I would switch my ride (I owned 4 and borrowed 1...)

Now that I telecommute from many states away, I just park my behind on the chair! 😛 And the bikes are gathering dust for the moment. :crying: Soon, my pretties, soon we'll be together...

  • We have three car parks at work, if you're early you get in the one closest to the building (a rarity for me!), reasonably on time you get in the middle distance car park (not too far away, and my normal carpark (in which I have my fave space)) and then there's the super late car park of shame. Hang your head...

  • I ride a motorbike to work, and we have a special area for bikes so choice is somewhat limited.

But I park with a wall in front and to the left of me to be courteous, but I I love that a dent in the tarmac guides my front wheel into the same spot!

You're right too.. I do grumble if someone parks in "my spot"! 🙂

  • I park at the far side of the car park away from the river as it floods twice a year!

car park of shame. Hang your head...

    ha ha! I love that!

  • I always try and park in the same place, this place is always in a corner, next to a wall(s) (if possable) as these are usually slighty larger spaces.

I do notice that other people (some for the same office as me) have started to try and nick 'my' parking space (yes i'm talking to you with the blue Audi TT).

I like to look after my car (ok so i'm totally anal about my car and how clean and tidy it is) so i tent not to park next to scabby cars at any time.

  • I work at a hospital with approx. 4000 employees. Given shift patterns etc, it's difficult to get the same spot every day. However, I do have my favourite areas of the car park(s) to aim for. I usually get them, but sometimes I don't and then I have a grumble to myself!

I like to park as near as possible to the entrance to my building just in case it's raining or snowing. Due to inconsiderate parkers, I also have to be careful to remember to park in such a way that getting out will not be a problem. Made a mistake once and spent 5 minutes extricating myself from a spot because of some idiot's parking!

Certain people probably have favourite spaces, but mostly it's favourite areas as I mentioned.

Anybody with a "nice" car that parks inconsiderately (e.g. taking up two spaces so no-one parks next to them and potentially scratches their car) should be culled and removed from the gene pool. Either that or we should all park right next to them so they can't get in their car. 😀

  • I've had a mix of driving to work (about 25 years) and not driving to work (about 18 years) - not the proportion I would have liked, as driving to work was a pain (because in the UK most drivers are discourteous road-hogging idiots; it's much better in some other places, but I refused to even consider driving in India).

When driving to work, I've sometimes been assigned to a privileged parking area, but not to a particular space, at other times had an assigned space (but we ignored the space assignments mostly), at other times stuck with park where you can.

Usually I tried to park under cover (shade in summer, keep the sleet off in winter) and somewhere which would neither flood nor get deep enough snow to be a problem (that was absolutely critical when I worked at UEA - that winter was awful; I guess that's what you get for working in that part of the country). That leads to me having a favorite space. But I didn't worry if someone snagged my favorite space - it was nothing important.

    High five sir....

My spot is most always the same (out of a couple spots), due to time of arrival. Also I tend to favor that area because it is right up against the fenced in area where people take their dogs to run around and play - and it's awesome just seeing cute goofy dogs running around first thing in the morning (or anytime of day), especially when they run over and just stare at you the second you pull up. Oh, I work at an animal hospital, that probably explains a few things.

  • As with taking a seat in a room full of people, I tend to take the same parking spot at work each morning. Yes, I do get miffed when someone has taken "my" spot. I know I don't own the spot. Perhaps it's a primal territory thing - or just a sense of not having your ?"space" respected.

My latest pet peeve: the marked reserved spots in the parking lot. I don't mind that. But, i do mind the fact that they labeled them "reserve space" instead of "reserved space". :w00t:

  • I am a consultant and I usualy park as far from the door as possible. Even though I am older than many of the employees I do this because I know I am capable of walking the further distance. I know there are some employees older and younger who can not. The spot is shaded, which is nice in the summer. There is a "furthest" spot that an employee and I "fight" over, we are both early arrivers, but she is earlier often. I don't grumble when she has it, but I do a little dance and sing when I get it. 😀 An additional benefit I have noticed is that, as a consultant, employees tend to be negatively predisposed against you. They notice when you park "out" and it gives you an opening to explain why, and that usually turns out positively. Conversely I suppose, if I always took the prime spot, they would grumble about "damn consultants" but never talk to me.
