Cube has changed, how to refresh Excel's look at it?

  • I am using Excel 2007 to access a 2008 cube. The SSAS expert added two hidden metrics to the cube so that they would not be used in pivot tables, but they would display when the user clicks "Show Details".

If I start from scratch to connect to the cube and build the pivot table, everything works fine; I can show details and see the new metrics.

If I use a pivot table I built and saved yesterday, I don't see the new metrics when I Show Details, even though I have Refreshed All. I have checked the connection strings and they are identical between my old wb and my new wb.

Is there any way to get the updated cube structure to mesh with Excel? We have dozens of users, and would like to avoid them all having to rebuild their pivot table reports from scratch.

    Thanks!

  • As no one has posted, I'll just say I hope you solved this. I have never had an issue with using Refresh All to bring any updates into preexisting spreadsheets. The only difference I see between my situation and yours is that I use SQL Server 2005.

  • Nancy,

Were you able to figure out how to refresh the cube metadata from within Excel so new dimensions/attributes/measures show, without having to recreate the Excel files? I have the same behavior as you; I deploy cube changes, but users can't see the modifications until they start a new file.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jarret
