This wasn't my decision, but honestly I can understand the decision and didn't fight it. Phil Factor was the person that brought this idea forward, and has worked with Larry Gonick to bring you a steady stream of comics that have entertained many people, myself included, over the last year or so. A few weeks ago one of the senior management people at Red Gate asked about the cost for the comics and did not feel that the cost of the comics was in line with the exposure and the reads that they got. This is not to say that Mr. Gonick is charging too much, as I have no idea what a good rate is for a comic. This is more that the cost of the comics, compared with what we see in our web analytics isn't a good return from management's point of view. This isn't necessarily a final decision, but more an immediate one. If you think that the comics are worth continuing, then I'd urge you to pass the word to friends, get more people to view older comics, and write a letter to Red Gate. You can contact them at info@red-gate.com, and explain why the comics are a great idea.If there is enough response, I'm sure we can continue this series.

WAITFOR

Comments posted to this topic are about the item WAITFOR

CLR Assemblies

Comments posted to this topic are about the item CLR Assemblies

Part 3 link broken

the stairway to StreamInsight article includes a link to part 3 of the series - StreamInsight - The Development Models but that link just takes me to an error page.

Stairway to SSRS

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Stairway to SSRS

Execution Plans

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Execution Plans

Index Seeks

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Index Seeks

Rebuild Master

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Rebuild Master

Stairway to Database Design

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Stairway to Database Design

Stairway to StreamInsight

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Stairway to StreamInsight

Decoding the SQL Server Index Structure

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Decoding the SQL Server Index Structure

Stairway to StreamInsight

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Stairway to StreamInsight

Beta - New Search Engine

We have rolled out a new search engine on our beta site. We've also tweaked the IFCodes to try and clarify which should be used for what. The revised list of tags are as follows:[ code ] - Will default to SQL highlighting[ code ="sql" ] - SQL highlighting[ code ="xml" ] - XML highlighting[ cpde="vb" ] - VB highlighting[ code ="other" ] - Any other code you'd like highlighted. This option relies on the highlighter to determine the language, so YMMV. As we're using Google Code Prettify, you can find more details on the supported languages here[ code ="plain" ] - This option just provides a fixed font, for when you don't want syntax highlighting, or the "other" option is not satisfactory.I've updated the IFCode Shortcuts, so the new Codes should appear in the list when you're composing a post. Here are some (pretty vanilla) examples from me, using the new Codes:Using [ code ]:
SELECT *FROM CustomersWHERE CustomerId = 123456
Using [ code="sql" ]
SELECT *FROM CustomersWHERE CustomerId = 123456
Using [ code="xml" ]
<xml><customer id="123456"><name>John Doe</name></customer></xml>
Using [ code="vb" ]
Imports SystemClass [class] Shared Sub [shared](ByVal [boolean] As Boolean) If [boolean] Then Console.WriteLine("true") Else Console.WriteLine("false") End If End SubEnd ClassModule [module] Sub Main() [class].[shared](True) ' This prints out: ". I mean this in the broadest possible sense of the word navigation. Currently, (as you may be aware), articles are tagged by authors/administrators, and a navigation system is created using these tags. We also display some of the most recent, and most popular articles (with popularity biased towards recently popular rather than popular for all time) on the homepage. Finally, when you actually view an article, it will generally offer you some links to so-called 'related' content, in two sections, one near the top of the article, and the other near the end of the article. There is also a search (Google custom search). What we'd like to do is try and gather some feedback from you, the site users, on what you like, what you don't like and how we might be able to improve the site for you so that you can get straight to the content you want/need, as well as creating a good experience for first time visitors to the site (recognising that long time site users probably use the site slightly differently).A few topics you might like to consider to get you started:[ul][li]Do you like articles being categorised? Is the current categorisation any good? How could it be improved?[/li][li]Do you ever browse for articles on the site, or are you usually trying to find a specific topic?[/li][li]Are related content links relevant?[/li][li]Do you think that users would help improve the 'related content' information?[/li][li]Does the search return relevant results for you (particularly when you know that a given article exists somewhere!)?[/li][/ul]Obviously, we internally have some of our own opinions already formed on these sort of things, but we're keeping a pretty open mind. If you've got examples of a sort of navigation that would work well, let us know and we'll put the ideas into the mix!Mel

SQLServerCentral Editorial Policy - Article Publication

I think it's time I just made a post for this and made it available for everyone to see. Actually it probably deserves an editorial as well that might explain it better.A number of complaints have been issued at various times from "experts" or knowledgeable SQL professionals that the information we publish is inaccurate or dangerous. I'll admit that we have published things that are inaccurate. Everyone has, including many experts. Some of them pull down information, some don't. Some don't realize that it's there, some do. It's a problem in any publication business. As far as things being dangerous, I am torn here. We can't control how people do things, and I would rather have the information out there along with the discussion than hide it. Do we never publish anything on cursors? or CLR manipulation of data that can be done better in T-SQL? The user has to beware, and that includes learning about something before you use it.Now that I've rambled, here's the basic policy.I look to publish articles that can be read, and have some technical information in them. We try to avoid white papers/marketing papers, but otherwise, I think if it's technical and written about SQL Server, we try to put it out there. We correct grammar and spelling as best we can, and make mistakes there at times, but our goal is to get information out there and debate it.I will let authors know when I disagree, or think they have made a mistake, but I don't censor articles. I certainly realize that I'm not always right, and perhaps I've missed something they haven't. But if they insist that something is a good way to solve a problem, I am willing to let them put it out there and have the community judge it.We are not trying to be the final authority on how SQL Server works, but rather a wide publication on how the product us used, and sometimes mis-used, in the real world. The goal is to build a community that helps each other.

Murach’s ADO.NET 3.5, LINQ, and the Entity Framework with C# 2008

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Murach’s ADO.NET 3.5, LINQ, and the Entity Framework with C# 2008

Site Issues - July 9 2009

Comments posted to this topic are about the item Site Issues - July 9 2009

Issues with Code tags...

Thanks for the new code tags, I did notice one that has nothing to do with Cut and Paste.Perhaps it's just my browser or my language settings, but when I use the IFCode Shortcuts for code="sql" or xml instead of

. The double quotes are coming across as ASCII(148) instead of ASCII(34). When I tried to use it with the ”(148) quotes it did not work. When I changed them to "(34) it did. Also, any chance you could make it accept sql or SQL? it seems to not like it if it's upper case. And error message that states could not find brush for SQL appears if you use the below.code="SQL"Thanks and keep up the good work.-Luke.Edit: in case you're wondering I'm using FF 3.0.11 with Unicode UTF-8 character encoding...
