Unfortunately in my company they have no current plans to implement it, although there is a constant need for standard database design and stored proc scripting. Is this a common state of affairs - or are all you other DBAs having much more technically challenging fun than me?Paul Ibison PhD, MCSDemail: Paul.Ibison@btinternet.com

Gaining experience with no experience?

Let me state that I know this is a very complicated problem, and of course there's not much getting around it other than "getting a job".I have a predicament: I work as a Windows sysadmin, and I watch over a database server. By that, I mean I make sure it's running, I make sure apps can still connect to it, and not much traffic happening.I really like SQL Server, and want to work as a Jr. DBA. Most of the time though, no one wants to work with you until you've had some data under your stewardship - and for good reason, it's *data*!But how do you counteract this? Run through some tutorials about data that isn't critical to you? Be inventive and use PowerShell to dump system information to a CSV, then create reports off of it (even though you still don't care about it)? Grab your last year of account transactions and import them into DB - then be criticized for such awfully stupid judgement?I've been trying to crack into volunteer DBA work. Guess what? Yeah, you got it, they want people who already do this stuff - "not just anyone".It's a tired problem, but one I'm hoping to hear everyone's thoughts on (and if you know of a volunteer DBA job I'll totally mail them back :hehe:)

Market share of SQL server

Ok. You spend lots of money and spend years studying to gain some degree of expertise in MS SQL server. However, SQL server's competitions are still alive and well in the job market. Oracle, DB2, Sybase, MySQL and even MS Access. If you get booted your current job where you use SQL server, it can be difficult to find another company that is looking for SQL server skill because that another company could be using Oralce, and in my opinion, it's too much for an average person to gain enough expertise in SQL server and Oracle in one life time.Anything you can share on this concern?

SQL exercises for job applicants

Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question but here it goes.It looks like we may be looking for a jr. sql developer in the near future, but I was wondering if there are any set of exercises that we can use as part of the interview for the applicant(s). I explain that I develop databases and C# .NET applications. Their question is always: "So, are you a DBA or a .NET programmer?" I don't have an acceptable answer to that.As a database developer, I don't manage the care and feeding of production servers. I design the database table structure, write stored procedures and views, create appropriate indexes, optimize queries, implement user and role security, and set up Service Broker solutions. I also write the client, preferably in C# .NET, though I've also done C++, VB, and PowerBuilder. Most of my clients are servers--multi-threaded apps that run as a service and have no UI. Some have interfaces to serial ports, TCP/IP, or third-party manufacturing systems. Recently, I've done quite a bit of ASP.NET.Given the above description, I have to answer the question as ".NET programmer." But I can't imagine having a job in which I'm not allowed to design (or re-design, as is usually the case) the database. As you can see, I have trouble describing "what I do" in a succinct fashion. Although I usually speak to recruiters on the phone, I can "hear" their eyes glaze over when I attempt to explain.I would appreciate any help in shortening and simplifying the explanation.

Looking to fill position in the Baltimore Area

If you are an experienced SQL Server DBA in the Baltimore, MD area (specifically Columbia), please respond to this post.Position involves installation, monitoring and maintenance of a number of stand-alone and clustered environments. I don't regret making the move from Access, but there is a lot to learn and the various paths are a little confusing for me at the moment.I went on a T-SQL course a few weeks ago as I was told that this is the most important aspect of SQL Server, but I am trying to do the rest on my own as I can't afford the general pricing of these courses. After T-SQL and knowing how SSMS works, I guess there are some possible next steps:- Move to .NET and using VS to develop bespoke applications - a developers job? This looks as though it will take a long time and I would rather delay getting overly involved in .NET and VB.NET/C#.NET development for now. I used an Access form as a front end for one database so can use that in the meantime if necessary as a temporary replacement for .NET. - Business Intelligence. It seems logical to start with SSRS. It looks as though employers are asking for a combination of SSRS, SSIS and SSAS. This may be a logical next step and then maybe SSIS followed by SSAS.- Look at what a DBA does - I am not sure I really understand this or the division between DBA and developer and how the business intelligence people fit in? Would it be possible for someone to clarify this for me as I'm a little confused about what I should be doing training wise. What I am doing now is continuing to work on T-SQL while getting to know SSRS and just very briefly delving into SSIS and SSAS. I don't know if that is enough or where that would categorise me in the job market. The danger at this stage is trying to learn too much and therefore not learning anything properly at all, however, I need to respond to the requirements of the job market and understand what these categorisations mean and where I should be heading. Many thanks for any advice.

SQL Report Writer in Glen Allen, VA or Lakewood, OH

We have an open position for an entry/mid level SQL Report developer. Money is saved by not having to staff a full-time DBA for part-time DBA work. Money that would normally be spent to staff the full-time DBA can be invested towards additional resources, or simply be absorbed back into the company, showing a greater net profit. For example, 50 hours per month (as apposed to 160) may be spent providing proactive database monitoring and routine DBA support. A company only pays for hours in excess of 50 per month as needed. This allows the recurring cost of DBA support to be kept to a minimum while maintaining the availability of additional DBA support as needed. So basically, an organization is able to pay only for what it needs. Investment is based on specific business requirements, not salary requirements of a qualified DBA that will likely be hammered by employment offers from different firms. * Better quality support. When an organization out-sources remote database support, the remote database support company takes on the burden of recruiting/maintaining DBA staff, funding employee benefits, office space, equipment, employee training and other related costs of having an employee. Furthermore, a remote DBA company should be able to provide a DBA staff with depth and diverse database knowledge. Ideally, the company requiring remote DBA support would have access to all of the resources of the company providing remote DBA services, not just a single employee.Indirectly this cost get reduced as well * Hiring costs * Benefits * Taxes * Paid time off (unavailability) * Equipment * Training costs * Turnover costs (after they get trained and experienced)Please do visit http://dbawork.com/index.html

What's the job market like for remote dba work?

Hi,I'm interested in starting my own small business doing remote dba and software development work. Stumbled here and noticed you guys have a great community.I'm requesting assistance with some career advice. Currently I'm working as an Access developer/admin and am looking for a job in the Hartford area. I do enjoy working with Access, but I feel that it has limited career potential. I love and have a passion for anything database related and I assume most of you do as well. Last year at this time I was looking at the job market/contemplating graduate school. I started getting into SQL Server and started reading the MCTS EXAM 432 training kit from Microsoft. That's when I decided to go to graduate school and I am expecting my MBA degree in a few weeks. I took the Access job a couple months ago because I finally had a time in my hectic school schedule, in addition to the need of money and experience. I have little knowledge with SQL Server, but once my courses are over, I plan to dive into the SQL Server books. I will be looking for a job that has anything to deal with SQL Server, but my ultimate goal is to become a DBA. I have an extreme desire to learn new things, either computer or business related (hence the MBA). I have seen many jobs that deal with SQL Server, but many are coupled with C or Java requirements, which I have no experience with other than college courses. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to get started? I always see jobs such as Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, but they all require a few years experience. It is rare to find anything entry level related to SQL Server. Anyways, thanks in advance!-Franuzz

How to give answers of some frequent questions

hello members, Several times I have faced the questions like- What is reason for change? I started looking for a new job recently, and realized that all the current DBA/developer jobs require at least 2005 and often 2008 experience, which I unfortunately do not have.I'd like to get advice from the community - basically have 2 questions:1. What is the best way to learn MSSQL 2005/2008 other than from a job (i.e. I need to get some experience with 2005/2008 to at least be given a chance in a company which values my MSSQL 2000 experience, but really needs 2005/2008 experience)?2. What websites or other places would you advise me to search/post resume to ... or any other advice [btw, I live in NYC and looking for a job here].Thanks a lot!

Small Database Company Looking for Beta Checkers

Hi,We are a small company developing tools for database users.
