My company just switched banks and we have to meet security requirements to upload check files to their SFTP site. We have finished the formatting for the flat text file and once the accounting department has created the file they will need to upload. To make the process simple for the accounting department users I have created a virtual machine with a secured share that they can dump the file into. Every 15 minutes I have a scheduled task that will run and move the files to a directory where the files will be further secured and encrypted. Once every hour a scheduled sftp job will run using an application called cuteftp to the new bank. The problem I am having is getting the files in the directory encrypted. I have tried using Symantec's PGP encryption software but keep coming across problems. Can someone recommend a command line pgp tool where I can generate my own public and private keys and also sign the files we will be uploading to the bank with the public keys they have provided?Any other thoughts are also welcomed. It's a whopper. I'm running into some issues, and I was hoping someone here has either worked with it, or maybe has some pointers in working with a file this large (2.5gb text file :w00t:)I guess first off, here's how I'm trying to load it, though the create table syntax isn't set in stone:
CREATE TABLE blah.dbo.nationaldnc (area nvarchar (3) NOT NULL, phonenumber varchar(8000) NOT NULL) BULK INSERT blah.dbo.nationaldnc FROM '\\myserver\Sample\2013-4-3_Global_18B81869-3F4C-4C1F-BF46-FF33984D9900.txt' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = '', BATCHSIZE = 100000)
This is how the file is set up, per donotcall.gov
The Full List in a Flat Text File has one three-digit area code, a comma, and a seven-digit telephone number per line, with a linefeed at the end of each line:123,4567890 123,4567890 123,4567890
My problems are:When I use anything other than nvarchar(max) for the second column, I get truncation errors. That makes me think that I'm using the wrong row terminator. However I'm not sure how to use char(10) for it, since just writing in char(10) doesn't seem to work. The other will likely be when bumping the phone list up against it, how to write the least harsh query. I have stored procedures that do it with our internal do not contact list, but it's so much smaller than this that I'm not sure they'll scale. I'll post those second, as it's somewhat long.Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks

So How Do You do your mass Mailings?

Once a year I help out a local non profit promote their annual event. This is the third year for doing it, and I just wanted some peer review to see if you'd have recommendations to do it differently.Right now, the whole thing is a full on DBA process, which requires my well rounded skills. I'd like to change this to a process where any end user could send out an eblast without it being a html developer + DBA required to do the grunt work.Does anyone use a program for sending stuff out like this? How do YOU do it? homemade app? web page? off the shelf app? I'd like to hear some suggestionsHere's my current process, the gory details are not really needed as far as script examples, i think:We've got a typical contact database with a few thousand contacts. We have a meeting where non-technical people say what they want in the email, and i will create a nice looking html email, with images and nice design, blah blah, but with placeholders for find-and-replace for personalizing the emails.ill stick the html into a table via a basic insert.Later, when we are ready to actually send it out: I select the html into a varchar(max) @HTMLBody for the body of the email. I create a cursor to loop thru the rows of the contacts to be spammed....er asked for donations. Find and replace placeholders to personalize the message to the contact int eh cursor ie REPLACE'[FirstName],@Firstname) for things like firstname/lastname/email/phone/etc. each email is sent via sp_send_dbmail to send out individualized messages. After it's all done,I'll end up reviewing msdb.dbo.sysmail_allitems and sysmail_faileditems for progress and issues. Contsantly rerunning the same query to see the unsent items dwindle down to zero.

What does Microsoft Update do?

For MS SQL Server, what does the Microsoft Update tool actually update?I had assumed that it would update the version of SQL server installed to the latest service pack. Suppose a Developer needs temporary access to a Production database. We need to track the Dev name, the reason for the access, the access termination date, and since it is production data, the request for that Dev needs to be digitally signed by their Dev's Manager. Also some of our Business Analysts need read-only access to database from Management Studio. But not forever. As they change projects they may no longer need that access. Then there is the ever fun question was access does Dev "x" have to our databases. And I'm only addressing Prod not dev, stage, or qa environments. This simple-seeming task can become a real nightmare and is easy to screwup. If you know of any 3rd party software that deals with this type of matter please tell me. If not, how do you manager your DB access permissions? SharePoint? Excel? Seat of pants? I apologise in advance if I missed the right forum for it.for the TL;DR; people out there, I need some advice on how to promote my SQL Server skills apart from MS Certifications. Just to give you a bit of background, I started years ago (13) as junior SQL developer (Oracle, but that doesn't really matter), and over the years I gradually moved towards software/web development and other tasks, reducing the exposure to SQL Server to little.I tried to keep up to date with the latest features and improvements (I'm MCTS SQL 2005 and I'll be taking the 70-461 exam for SQL 2012 in a couple of weeks) and I did (and do now) develop and administer various DBs and instances for my company and its clients, but since I work for a web development agency the DB-side-of-things is not really "challenging".After a years of meditation I think it's time for me to go back to full time DB development since web development is not "my thing", but of course I have no hands on experience in BI and my times on Datawarehouse are long gone. Since I'm out of the loop a while, I can't find a job in those positions that easily since most of them require X years of experience (in order to maintain the salary level consistent to my current one) and I don't really want to start as Junior again. Also, given all the new features that SQL Server ships with now, I don't think my years spent as C# (and asp.net for that matters) and sysadmin should go wasted either. The question is, apart from certifications (which don't really mean much I guess - don't take me wrong, I value them but I don't think they can be my only "selling point") is there a way to further promote my skillset? Many friends recommended to "work on some side project". In the world of web development people seeking for a new job would roll out some cool website or collaborate on some other project to display their skillset. But DBDs & DBAs are different breeds (at least, I reckon so) and I reckon I can't make up a database from nothing (and for no reason). And even pretending I could, how could I showcase it? This doesn't seem like a viable way... or maybe I'm wrong? What's the best way to get "back in the loop" according to you?I hope this makes sense :)Thanks in advance!Cheers,Matt

what's with all the "query help"?

Why, oh why do so many people looking for help think that "query help" is a good title to get people interested in their topic? If you have a pain in your chest, do you go to the doctor and shout "body help" ?Come on people, make your topic title relevant and informative, please!

Does anyone have a book they would recommend for SSAS 2008R2?

I have Delivering Buiness Intelligence with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 by Brian Larson and its been a great resource for building my first dimensional datamart and cube but I think I need something more in depth. So, what I am trying to do (and praying I am not pioneering this!) is get some sort of high level (and possibly hierarchical) outline of the major business disciplines surrounding data in general. I have spent the last few years improving my understanding things like Data Modeling methodology and concepts, DR and High Availability, Data Profiling/Discovery, Master Data Management, Change Management, etc etc. What I am wondering, is if there is any reference material out there that lists out the major business disciplines surrounding data, and possibly gives at least a rudimentary explanation of each facet. Some time back, I recall reading an article that mentioned many IT professionals tended to drive Subarus, specifically the WRX in its various incarnations.I know I probably missed a few brands (Rolls Royce, Lamborghini come to mind,) and I know I'm missing brands that are common outside the US (Vauxhall, Holden,) but the polls only allow up to 15 options, and I couldn't get a Holden if I wanted to...:-)Jason

Lost desktop pc

And no, it didn't go missing. It just died with a loud pop. Could be the power supply, the system is 8 years old.Question for those more hardware savvy, if I replace both the motherboard and the power supply, would it boot up with the current hard drives?

Personal PC for VM spec question

Good evening! Let me start by saying that I'm not sure if I put this in the right section of the site, so my apologies if I got it wrong. So at my job, I'm trying to position myself to be more of a DBA and less of a general Systems admin. I spoke with my boss about this and he approved, he gave me a lab at work to play with. Now, unfortunately, I don't have free reign over the lab, as it's all on the same Domain, etc., as our production environment. I have no issue with this and I was actually thinking of building out a PC at home to use as a test server. I already have a TechNet subscription that will cover the licensing. I am just stumped on the hardware, as the last time that I built a PC was probably when the Athlon 64 was brand new, lol. Can anyone provide me with suggestions? I do know that I am looking to get 24GB of ram on this box, as I will end up having at least 5 VM's that I know of powered on most of the time (1xAD, 2X Server 2008 r2 w/SQL 2008r2, 2x Server 2012 w/SQL 2012) running as well as my main OS install. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I am not tied to a specific architecture. Thanks for putting up with the long post, Thanks for feedback.

Web application design query

Hello,I am new to web application designing and using .net (MS Visual Studio 2010) to design an application. The issue I have is to display information on a table based upon the 2 values selected by the user in the drop down lists. When the user presses the Find button, the results should be displayed in the form of a table from a table. Could someone please tell what component (table or ???) I need to select from the list and what code would need to be written to associate the 'Find' button to the table. Thanks inadvance for your help. Please find the screenshot for the application attached. Thanks,Paul

Ignite Confio for SQL

Has anyone used Ignite for SQL Server monitoring? Our consultant suggested a data center in Germany for cost reasons. While there are no legal impediments, I'd like to know anything else I should be concerned with having our data a continent away. The center would host our SQL Server, Citrix farm, Exchange, file system, and BDC. We're told we need to keep the PDC on our premises.Thanks.

What is the Best way for getting day wise data in production server in mysql

Can any one help me.............Please tell me what is the best way for getting data in production server. If possible tell me step by step with example..or else give the ref links for that...The way is ...I am getting the data from production server like day wise.and that should be stored in another server like local server. Please help me...........

ask.sqlservercentral

is asksqlservercentral a sister of sqlservercentral? can I use my login there? :-)
