Maybe SQL Server, Analysis Services, and Integration Services? If so, then it COULD be that you have SSAS highlighted in Object Explorer. Default behavior of SSMS is to create a new query in whatever instance is highlighted in Object Explorer. I know it sounds simple, but have seen people not notice that for over an hour, experienced people (like me ;) )

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Then it is time to rebuild the workstation. If this has not been done lately, it is way past time. There is something on it that is conflicting, or some type of virus.I have never heard of this doing what you are describing.Andrew SQLDBA

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Forgot to mention that this is a recurring issue and have done uninstall/reinstall for 13 times. After the re-installation it works perfectly fine. But the next day or two, the problem creeps all over again. This is SQL SERVER 2008 enterprise version.

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Since this is on your own workstation, I would have removed SQL and reinstalled, plus all service packs. Would take about a full hour.I would have been done and back up and running by now. You may search for days and never get what is actually causing this issue. What version of SQL are you running on your workstation? Did you install all service packs?Andrew SQLDBA

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

I would thought to reiterate my issue here. When you click on Database Engine Query button, it does not bring up a Database Engine Query window.Instead, it brings up Analysis Servies Query and attempts to connect to the Analysis Services. The Server Type box area is greyed out so I can't really select anything.I am able to connect to the server via other means. But not in SSMS.I've searched and it seems like this is a known issue for some people.Does anyone know a solution to this?

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

What has been changed on your box?I would probably just uninstall SQL and install it again on your box. That would be the less trouble some thing to do.Andrew SQLDBA

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Yup. I'm trying to connect to a network server. The name goes like xxx.xxx.xx.xx/name.Again, this worked perfectly fine yestserday..Login mode is set to "Single Mode" but I'm able to select it when I first open up the Management Studio.Only when I try to open up the new query window to connect to the Database Engine, it wouldn't even give me the option.

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Ok, you should be able to log into your own box. If the service is running and you have installed all the tools. What are you using to log into your own box? The services that you just showed, are those from your box?Who installed SQL on the box that you are using? That is what I was talking about, are the services running. You have to have SQL installed on your own box, before you can connect to another server. if you do have SQL installed on your box, are all the services running?Andrew SQLDBA

RE: Unable to connect to Database Engine on New Query Window

Reboot didn't help. No changes were made to the system. But when I click on "NEW QUERY" button, it does not connect to the Database Engine. When I click on "Connect" button, Server type is greyed out and is fixed on Analysis Services. The only place where I am able to modify is Server Name, but it wouldn't help at all because the Server Type is fixed onto Analysis Services.I am able to connect to the server though, I can see the tables from the object explorer. But I can't query anything.I'm extremely frustrated and have no idea why this is behaving tihs way..Also, a metadata started to show up whenver I open up a new query window...Can anyone help?
