I've been administering our company's SQL database for a good while now, and I've begun to move into an idea I had to use XML to handle API calls that rely on our data. Unfortunately, I have essentially no XML experience, so I'd like a few pointers on how to handle XML in the context of SQL Server.Looking at the MSDN article on SQLXML, it seems that it should be possible to generate an XML document by using FOR XML and formatting as needed, with the additional ability to insert parameters into the XML generation statements that would hold data pulled from our database; from there, it should be possible to export the contents to a file, correct? At this point, though, I'm a bit lost. I need to get the XML document sent out and retrieve a response, and I'm not sure this is something SQL Server is capable of (and I honestly wouldn't expect it, following the logic that the prime function of a database should be to house data, rather than firing off calls across the web).If my reasoning holds true, how would I get the SQL-generated XML documents out to the API in question? I believe the POST command for XML should do it, but I honestly don't have a clue how or where I'd direct that to where it should go. That's my biggest stumbling block at the moment. If this is too much of an XML-based question, I understand; I'll toss this thread out and try the XML section of the forums instead. I would be pleasantly surprised if my guess about SQL's XML transmission is wrong, but I'll adapt as needed. Many thanks for your time.

Backward Compatibility

Hi allI know that SQL Server is backward compatible - I can restore a 2005 Database into a 2008 instance. Each report runs daily and a team uses each of the reports on a daily basis. I would like to make it easy for the team to come in each day and print all the reports. I have two ideas:Idea 1:Each date, all the reports will print to a folder with the date as the folder name (in YYYYMMDD format so that it can be sorted easily). So, I would have a Parent folder and subfolders with names like: 20120520, 20120521, 20120522, etc. Each day a new folder would be created and the reports would go into that folder.Idea 2:If Idea 1 is not possible with SSRS, then I would print all reports to one folder, but I would want to put the date at the beginning of the file name in the YYYYMMDD format. This way when they are sorted, all of the reports for the day are sorted together and the users do not have to hunt and scroll for reports. Is this possible with SSRS?Thank you.Tammy

Will partitioning help?

HiWe are planning to partition a table based on a column containing year. There will be 3 partitions: one for current year, one for previous year and one for remaining years(containing data which is usually not queried). Now we plan to keep all partitions in same filegroup on same disk as we don't hae option for additional disk.My question is, will it boost the performance of my queries considering that most of the queries are fired on current year data.

Edition of SQL server 2012

Currently we have SQL server 2008 standard edition, we are using SSRS and SSIS.If we later want to upgrade the server to 2012, can we still use standard edition for the purpose of using SSRS and SSIS just like we do in SQL server 2008?I know there is a business intelligence edition in 2012, but more expensive than standard, so I just don't want something we don't use, but to buy the edition that has equivalent function as 2008 BI features.

General Qestions

Hi friends, could u please any one tell me the these questions1) what is your company file architecture and how much data u r handle.2) how many data and log files u r handle in u r company3)what is the difference between installtion of 2005 and 20084)i have done installtion of sqlserver in c:\ drive but i want d:\ drive how to do this. When I execute the job, it 'works' but is putting out an error message about the connection I set up in the package for use only with SQL Server Configuration values. To me, it seems when my package runs, it is trying to 'validate' the connection to my SQL Server Configuration too soon and I get the error messages.Since I want to be able to write the package one time for deployment in 3 environments, I am setting the connection string for the 'SQL Server Configuration' on the job. I know that the package is reading from the Configuration table, because values used by the package are not being saved in the package and can only be found on the configuration table. Each environment is on a separate server with different user id that the jobs run under. So I don't put that information in my package. So while my Package actual runs correctly and is obviously getting the connection information, I don't want the job to keep putting out these messages that make it look like an error occurred.I'm not sure what else I can say or show because this is very straight forward. The package is a simple data flow between two tables on two separate databases with a single configuration. On the job I set the ConnectionString for the connections.

SSRS and Stored Procedure

Hello,I'm building a report in SSRS. I have essentially no prior knowledge of the structure of the database. I have looked at the different numbers of rows in each table and have identified some tables of interest. One thing I'm having trouble with is figuring out where certain fields that are key fields come from. That is, if there is a customer type key field in the Customer table, I want to know what table contains that key as its primary key and contains descriptive information on the different types. What is the best way to do this? I've tried making a database diagram and adding related tables. However, one thing I don't like about this is the lines between the tables aren't drawn to the fields they are linked to. The lines themselves may say the foreign key constraint in a tool tip, but they don't accurately diagram the relationships.By contrast, if I add 2 tables to a view that I know have a relationship, the diagram in the view draws lines from the primary key of one table to the field in the other table that references that key. The issue is that you have to know that the tables are related already as far as I know. Is there a fast way to figure out these tables relationships? I would appreciate any advice anyone can give. Does anybody know where the data sources .sln files (Business Intelligence Development Studio files) are stored?

Remove MSDTC from Cluster

Hi - I recently uninstalled a SQL cluster, however I am left with an issue with MSDTC. I am trying to re-create the cluster but the IP we assigned for MSDTC is saying that its in use. I can see there is a service and also in COM there is a clustered MSDTC.How can I completely remove MSDTC from the cluster? I have tried MSDTC -uninstall but this just uninstalled the local copy of MSDTC and not the clustered one.All thoughts welcomeThanks

cmd file name with space between each string

Hi,I have a file which I named "file1 codp meta2.rar"As you can see this file name as spaces betwwen string which makes the below command don't work: set @NomeFinal ='file1 codp meta2.rar'set @DirectoriaFinal='c:'select @cmd = '"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" x -u '+@NomeFinal+' '+@DirectoriaFinal+''exec master..xp_cmdshell @cmd, no_outputThe execute command only takes part of the name "file1" because of the spaces...How can I make this work ? the file name shoud have spaces....

How to insert the records by group

Table 1 contains the below fieldsGROUP_ID, Emp_id and emp nameTable 2 contains the below fieldsEMpid, GroupList, GROUP_IDScenario is to insert the Grouplist and Group id in to table 2Condition:1)	GroupList – Each grouplist (per GROUP_ID will have (TOTAL_CNT / 4) records in it (rounded up to nearest whole value)Count the total no of records in table 1 group by GROUP_IDE.G. Parent - Child hierarchy problem

Hi,I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to give me a hand on a little problem I have.Basically we a relationship table, that uses a parent-child association, this table is displayed in the code below as table #Old.However I need to link the children together as shown in table #New.The IDs will be random so it's not possible to just increment the id by one but it is most likely safe to say that the next id will be greater then the previous. If someone could please show me a query method of getting from table #Old to table #New I would be really grateful. Many thanks.Lewis
create table #Old (FirstID int, SecondID int)insert into #Old select 101, 201insert into #Old select 101, 202insert into #Old select 101, 203insert into #Old select 101, 204insert into #Old select 101, 205select * from #Oldcreate table #New (ParentID int, FirstID int, SecondID int)insert into #New select 101, 201, 202insert into #New select 101, 202, 203insert into #New select 101, 203, 204insert into #New select 101, 204, 205select * from #Newdrop table #Olddrop table #New
Database Blocks:table is in LOCK status as sp_cursorclose not getting processed

HI All,I am facing a weird issue ,during the processing of the certain tasks from Application, some part of time we are observing blocks in our database.Processing ,load are quite normal at that time of blocks and what we observe is last query which is holding locks and making the other processes to wait is sp_cursorclose;1 it is taking a very long time just say 2hrs.As the blocks are making the other activities to be on hold, application performance went down. Why sp_cursorclose is taking a very long time to process and one more thing what we observed is this process is blocked by spid 0.What is the significance of the process 0?why and when this process blocks the others? Is there a way to fix this issue or it should definitely fixed from the application?

Marge replication

Hi, I am configured successfully Marge Replication in my PRO ENI.I have a small query..If i insert any data in a any table automatically new column is generated Column Name :- rowguidData type :- uniqueidentifierAny one can explain me. Remove the passive nodes first from the possible owners. Keep the list of nodes that you remove from the possible owners for future reference during this update process.Do we really have to do this? Has anyone applied SP1 without ' removing half of the nodes from the possible owners list in the failover cluster instances ' Is there any straight forward instruction MS instruction seems bit complicated to me :)Thanks in advance

sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats hangs in one of my databases

Hi I'm looking at one of my databases and trying to get fragmentation infoi run the queryselect top 10 * from sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats(21 ,0,NULL,0,'LIMITED') but the query itself just sits there for an age (i stopped it after 12 minutes)i ran sp_who2 and that particular spid is reporting back DBCC under the command, with a very very slowly incrementing DiskIO columnis sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats just ruinning a DBCC SHOWCONTIG under the bonnet? - all my other databases seem to run this absolutely fine
