As far as speed and deduping, there are several more viable options for SQL Server. EMC has a solution of backing up to a grid using their RAIN technology which dedupes as well.But with SQL Server, I still prefer to backup to file utilizing something like SQL Backup, or using RedGate Backup or LiteSpeed. Then do your backup to tape or to a grid.
