The wizard did it!  Gave me the confidence the scrap the old stuff and rewrite using the designer.  All I would add is that, if you have a big enough monitor, resize designer tasks that operate on a list of databases (eg the Backup Database Task) such that you can see the entire list at a glance, without opening up the task.  That said, it might even be in the ebook somewhere and I overlooked it.  If so I apologise.   Many thanks.
