sql 2008 can compress data and backups

Third party tools such as Litespeed can do it for SQL 2005.

litespeed can not compact more that winrar, at least with the tests that i have made...

Litespeed has adjustable compression. It can go pretty small.

My backups go straight to lto-4 tape. Don't know if it's as good as windar, but for the price of tape it's unbeatable

My problem is that i need to send files over the Internet. The internet connection in AFRICA is very poor..

What you need is software similar to Bit Torrent or RapidShare without the file share being publically available for just anyone.

How can i implement a thing like that? so that only the company (across AFRICA) can use it?
At this moment we put the files in a FTP Server, but the files (backup files) are very BIG so it takes many time to do...

The websites are restricted from my workplace (I can't see them). But go to RapidShare.com and see if it has any information on private implementation. I know a couple of writer friends of mine have used it to send info to themselves, so I have to believe there's some sort of security.

But what does the RapidShare do that is better that send a file through FTP? Does RapidShare compress the file?

You could use 7z (http://www.7-zip.org/ )
Check out the compression ratio in their website.

It's better then WinRar, but still we have a problem, it's not so good that shrinks the file to a level where we can pass it through the NET.
Maybe there's another solution like that, but that compreesses more that 7-zip...
If someone knows , please help.

RapidShare and BitTorrent aren't about compressing the file. They're about passing files over the Internet in smaller bits and pieces so it doesn't necessarily take so long to get the file.
EDIT: This sort of file sharing uses multiple computers to send the files, hence the reason it occurs faster. That's the theory behind it anyway.
