Are there any decent and legitimate jobs out there that are parttime and let you keep your "day job"? I'd like to work a little part time after hours - discreetly of course - and am wondering if those jobs exist?
Any advice/comments are much appreciated.
Is there much at guru.com or similar freelancing sites for example?

I would check the freelancing sites and tech recruiters for your area, in that order.

If you're not in it (parttime) for the money but just for something to do, you could always pitch in on these forums... it's a "free education" that will really sharpen up your SQL skills. Some posts I've seen are worth more than money in the knowledge they bring.

Great idea, but I haven't had much luck finding the freelancing sites. Elance had minimal sql server dba jobs and guru does not even post jobs from what I can see.

I'm a little nervous with talking to local recruiters. It's a small world you know...

The freelancer site that I frequent is freelancer.com.

Beyond that, recruiters would be a better bet.

I've tried finding that kind of work in the past and never was able to either. The few hits I have received came through networking with fellow DBA's. They're the ones most likely to get the call from a former employer or someone else they know. If they can't handle it or feel like sharing, you can get a call. In other words, go to your local users group and talk to people, as a start.

i ran across odesk a while back, not a ton of SQL DBA jobs though. might be worth at least a glance, though the hourly rates are apparently diving pretty quick.
