How to set up file sharing between my laptop and desktop

  • Hi, I am quite new to asp.net and since I set up my machine for development enviroment I can't anymore access data from it using laptop connected to my LAN. Both run Win XP pro media centre 2002. Before installing Visual Web Developer 2008 and SQL express 2008 and IIS I could use Simple File Sharing like a charm. Any idea how to get this work?

Does my developer machine require advanced security settings and permissions? (I tried to play around with that too like set up same accounts with the passwords on both machines and set up permissions, but it was still the same)

My search has narrowed and I found out that SQL server 2008 express is the application that causing troubles with file sharing on LAN.

Anyone please has any idea how to set up file sharing between my laptop and desktop?

I can access laptop from desktop but not vice verza.

    Thanks.

  • Dont quite understand what you are asking.

Do you have two desktops with Visual Studio one one and SQL Server 2008 express on the other. Where is the share and how are you trying to access it?

May be if you can explain specifically what you are trying to achieve, it may be easier to help.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

ok I am trying to share my files and folders through my LAN.

Before I configured my desktop for development I could use simple file sharing and I could access data 1 to 1 and vice versa. After I installed SQL Server 2008 express on my desktop I can see folders from my laptop but can't access it. But from desktop to laptop all works fine.

Desktop: Windows XP pro Media Centre 2002, VWD 2008, IIS, SQL Server 2008 express

Laptop: Windows XP pro Media Centre 2002

  • Are you sharing and accessing folders that have SQL Server data files?

  • No, only pictures and music.

  • OK, I found the solution! I don't have norton installed, but this works.
