Moving the server prompt in SSMS

  • This is an annoyance most people have probably never encountered!

I have a setup with multiple monitors, currently arranged thus:

    +---+---+

    |   |   |

    | 3 | 2 |

    |   |   |

    +---+---+

        |   |

        | 1 |

        |   |

        +---+

I have SSMS start up on screen 3. The problem is that it displays the server prompt with the 'x' position centered using screen 3, but with the 'y' position centered using screen 1!

The result is that the prompt box 'appears' in the non-displayed region below screen 3.

My workaround is to use the keyboard shortcut <alt><space> to bring up the the size/move/minimise menu, select 'move' and use <right-arrow> to move the prompt onto screen 1; however, it would be much simpler if the prompt box was just centered in the SSMS window! Is there any way of achieving this behaviour?

  • Not really an answer, but another work around. I use winsplit revolution (freeware) to organise windows on my screen. With this you could use ctrl,alt,F7 to quickly move the active dialogue to the top left corner of screen 3.

On a similar note, I'd like to be able to define the child window size in SSMS when a query is opened (MDI environ) but don't think positioning is available for this either
