Company Off source the whole DBA department to India!!!!

  • My friend is a DBA and she told me that her company was planning to off shore the whole DBA department to an Indian company that put in the cheapest bid. The company wants to save money. She is going to lose her job possibly in January.

Is it a smart move for the company? The databases hold the most important assets of the company - data and why does the company want someone from another part of the world to control it ?

  • I think that it's all about $$$.

The increased complexity of having to sustain a connection between two countries can only be a burden. Imagine if one of the US servers goes down; those in India can't connect to it. Problem solved? Me thinks not!

  • There is also the time differential involved as well. Of course, if the Indian company is running 7 x 24, that won't be an issue.

  • This is the same like having an insurance ...

As already stated, this may be a straight $$ matter.

Some companies want to cut costs NOW.

The only thing you can do is to point to the quality of SLA.

And pray they keep some dba/sysadmin knowledge in house.

and for the company, pray they don't need the insurance test.

We have encountered this more than once, companies not willing to pay the price to do a proper job, and at disaster time, complain there is to much down time.

We recently took such a loss, because management decided to go for a less optimized (i.e. unstable) hardware. In stead of making the 20K investment, they took the risk a did lose the game ...

    Total cost at least 5x. + 20K.

There is a tale about financial companies, who predicted a long term loss of certain kind of credits, but they went for short term profits ....

Now the whole world is suffering the consequences .... and that what is still to come....

  • It could work, but IMHO, it's a bad move. At least to move everything. You could move some stuff, but I'd like someone nearby I could call in a pinch. There are always going to be times when you need someone onsite. Internet issues, ISP down, etc.

Outsourcing is always a hard decision, and I think too often people look at short term dollars and don't really think it through.
