64-bit OS, 32-bit SQL Server 2000

  • Hi all,

I have read that 64-bit SQL Server 2000 can only run on Itanium. But I experienced errors while tryiing to install 32-bit SQL Server 2000 on a standard 64-bit Windows Server x86 OS system. Can anyone say with certainty that 32-bit SQL Server 2k should run on 64-bit Windows OS? I understand that SQL Server won't reap the benefits in this case, but is there an advantage to the OS and system operation (i.e. recognizing more RAM, etc)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • SQL 2000 will not run well in WOW on a 64 bit system.

You need to install a 32 bit OS if you want to run 32 bit SQL Server.

  • That is precisely how we are running for the time being. I wasn't here when it was setup so I just inherited it. I do see some performance issues where queries and batches that should perform well do not. In fact, in comparison to our test box, which is 32-bit server 2003, it actually outperforms our production box in some cases. We only have 111 GB in 20 databases so to me, the problems that I see, shouldn't exist.

Michael - do you know of any articles that specifically reference this issue? There is a push to wait for the move to 2005. I have already made recommendations to move now and this may help further my cause.

  • Hi guys!

Hoping thread is still alive 🙂

I've got the same basic question as poster - I want to run 32bit sql 2000, on our sbs 2003 64bit server. Will it work?

Googling it seems to provide me with lots of yes, no and maybe.

Anybody actually running this setup out there?

  • I'm running 2k on half of our w2k3 64bit cluster. Only problem I had was when installing to over-ride the windows search service.

  • Splendid, I'll give it a whirl. Hopefully all will be well.

I'll post back if anything acts up, for future reference.

  • You may install MSDE 2000 Instead of sql server 2000 on 64bit windows.

    it works fine.
