SQL6.5,7,2000 and 2005

  • Experts,

I am going to take a session about 'Difference between Sql6.5,7,2000 & 2005 on first week of february in my office. It is mandatory. My RM has given topics to everybody.

I need the answer in the below format.

    1) From the SQL Developer Perspective ( no need to include all functions, because i know there are lot of lot of undocumented commands and normal commands which have been introduced in each version,so i need some important commands list)

    example:

ROWID() Function TOP Clause in UPDATE

    Sql6.5 No No

    Sql7 No No

    sql2000 Yes No

    sql2005 Yes Yes

    2) From the SQL DBA Perspective

    (Please refer the above format)

    3) From the Database Designer Perspective

    (Please refer the above format)

    4) From the Database Architecture Perspective

    (Please refer the above format)

i have started to gather information.I know some experts would come to front row for me to beautify my presentation.

    Thanks in advance.

  • This is a mamoth task. I would omit SQL6.5 from the presentation. In about 4 years time there will be DBAs working who were not born when SQL6.5 was deprecated.

  • Karthik,

You, of all people, should know better... get onto the Microsoft web site and look for "What's new in" each of the different versions. Do some of your own work... We're not going to write your bloody presentation for you 😛

A good "Senior Software Engineer" should have no problem with such a task 😉

  • Unless you are using 6.5, doesn't make sense to look back at this version or the changes in 7.

And Books Online for each version has this information.

  • Jeff,

I have already gathered informations.I think you were understood my question wrongly.

I have asked some suggestions and highlighting points from good experts to add it in my presentation.

I didn't asked you to write for me.;)

  • Perhaps it's the language barrier, but it looked to me that you wanted us to give you all of the differences between the different versions for you to write your presentation. It didn't look, from what you asked, that you were going to do any research on your own.

Perhaps it would have been better to ask "Where can I find out what all the differences between the various versions of SQL Server are." As a sportsman might say, "It's all in the wrist" and on a forum, where we cannot benefit from tonal inflection, etc, it's all in what you ask. Very slight change in what you ask will change the perception of the reader from "What an arrogant SOB he is" to, "Oh, good question... lemme see if I can help." 🙂

It's a very important technique to learn to survive in business... 😉

  • Then, you need to do as I said... check out the "What's New" section of each release on the Microsoft website.

  • Hi, folks!

This is a forum to discuss the topics we are all interested. It is not a battle field. My understanding is that Jeff was kidding (from the icon he used). Please do not take it in person.

I am also interested in the differences between SQL 2000 and 2005. It will be much easier to learn for experienced SQL 2000 DBA.

Any input (a link, or ...) on the difference will be greatly appreciated.

It was a real life coach... I think Karthik can go a long way if he changes his wording just a bit. If you had been following his posts all along, you'd know that he's been asking for help on vocabulary and the like and it certainly wasn't meant as a put down.

Go back and look at the tone of my email... it was meant as friendly advice. If you don't like the tone, then practice what you preach... Peace to all, please drive through 😛

  • Everyone please take a step back and calm down. I don't think Jeff meant anything, but everyone please discuss the topic only.

Yep I Agree 🙂 that is why i wrote "Flame on" because the topic became very hot but it doesnt mean im against someone... I just felt that we just need to take a deep breath before the topic changes to something. 🙂
