Of course, SQL Server on Linux is limited in many ways.   If you need to test with any of these features, you are out of luck:
SQL Server 2017 on Linux: Unsupported features
Though they are harder to find, there are also some important features that are not supported in Docker on Windows either, including Machine Learning (R and Python).

  • You make a good point, containers aren't suited for all uses.   That is why we added data delivery for SQL Server instances as well, to enable delivery and use of database clones for all uses.

Like, in a Hyper-V VM?  e.g. If I want to spin up an instance to test ML services in SQL 2017, I can't use a docker container though a VM would work.

  • Yes, the SQL Server 2017 instance can be bare metal or VM.   The Windocks site has similar articles to the above on how we support instances.
