    Interesting, I found this documentation which seems to contradict the documentation you posted:

    Any scenarios not specified in the list above are not supported, including but not limited to the following:

    • Installing SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2017 on same computer (side by side).

      • It's about 2/3 of the way down the page on the section titled SQL Server 2017 support for SQL Server 2005.

      Tricky question cause SQL Server 2005 is only supported in Windows Server 2008 or below, and SQL Server 2017 is only supported in WS 2012 and higher... ;p

      That's interesting, as I found a note that says SQL Server 2017 cannot be installed with any earlier versions if your OS is Windows Server 2018 R2:

      "SQL Server 2017 cannot be installed side-by-side with earlier versions of SQL Server on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core SP1. For more information on Server Core installations, see Install SQL Server 2016 on Server Core."

      I think that's only on the Core edition.  But yes, I chose SQL Server 2008 and above since I didn't think there's a version of Windows that supports 2005 and 2017.
