At home I have a SQL Server database which I use SQL Developer Edition to access. Truthfully it has been several months since I've gotten into SSMS. Today I tried doing so, twice, but nothing happened. The shortcut still exists. I checked its properties and found the ssms.exe file. Even double clicking on it does nothing. Although it does cause a sound to play, exactly like it does when I click on the shortcut. Its a common enough sound. In fact, so common that I ignored it. Now I know that it is related to my not being able to run SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition. Why am I not able to do this?

I'm running this on a Windows 10 Professional machine, 64-bit.

As your SSMS is somewhat out of date now, I'd recommend downloading the up-to-date version and installing that (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms).
