Inplace upgrade from SQL2K to SQL2008

  • Hello all,

We are working a on a very old manufacturing application which runs on the same Windows 2008 server along with SQL 2000 Standard ver SP4. Because of the way this app works, the easiest path would be to conduct an inplace upgrade from SQL 2000 to 2008, which would get us a pivot point to go to SQL 2014. Although the current production instance is a physical box, we have virtualized it so we can test and rollback to snapshots if needed.

For some reason, running the 2008 upgrade process only presents the mgmt tools as an option - It never actually upgrades the SQL binaries to the 2008 version, and doesn't provide a choice to select the database engine. Running the Upgrade Advisor seems to work correctly, and only throws a couple of minor flags.

Are we missing something obvious here? Any insight appreciated, thanks.
