DTS connection to Access app w/ workgroup security

  • I need to export data from an Access 2000 (SP1) app which uses workgroup security. I open a new Access connection in DTS (SQL Server 2000 SP3a). No one is logged into the Access app.

I enter the file path and name, the login name and password, hit the OK button and get an error message stating:

"Error Source: Microsoft JET database engine.

Error Description: Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user."

    Any suggestions?

    thanks much

  • k2,

Since you are using workgroup security, this info may be wrong, but give it a try. I think the username and password in the connection properties is for the the login for Access, not the file sysyem where the Access db is located. Try leaving username and password field blank (or "Admin" as the username and a blank password). Alternatively, you can play with the Assess login information located under /Tools/Security. This is guess at this point. I will try to recreate this tomorrow.

  • ..Oops. I meant Access, not Assess.

  • Thanks for your reply, JR. I've tried using the default "Admin" login with a blank password, as well as leaving both blank. No luck.

Unfortunately the Access app is compiled and does not permit the user to manipulate much in the security area - its all hardwired. This application has been a headache for a number of reasons, including the fact that because it uses workgroup security the way it does it interferes with other secure Access applications.

  • you'll have to enter the name and path to your "system" database
