I just thought in the spirit of 4 July I'd like to share some talking between Captain Hiller (Will Smith) and David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) I got on the internet.

In fact 20-year old technology is probably less susceptible to 21st Century virus attacks so perhaps we can look forward to Independence Day 3, Return of the Cobolers!

It never ceases to amaze me just how easy movies and TV make complex computing tasks like hacking unknown systems (what if the aliens didn't have a binary system?), high-speed facial recognition, fingerprint matching and DNA analysis (CSI makes it all look SO easy!) or even just simply how FAST internet pages just SNAP on the screen instantly whole and complete with images and all (I sure wish I had that type of super-speed internet!). Folks who don't know better tend to have such high expectations from computer systems because of these examples.

There's a cut scene which shows Jeff Goldblum working on the computer system of the crashed alien craft in Area 51 and presumably working out in advance how to hack in to it and write the virus. This makes the later scene where they upload the virus much more sensible.

The crashed spaceship has been there for years, so they had quite some time to figure out the interfaces.

Easy question. Though it would have been much more intriguing if it were ransomware or maybe some sql injection. Do they have sql on the alien planet? Would it be AQL instead of SQL? Hmmm...
