Looks about as floppy as the 3.5" disks (or Amstrad's 3" disks).

I remember them well. Weren't they (informally) referred to as stiffies, to much sniggering?

When I started in IT (1984) some of the clients were still on systems that used 8" floppy discs (these held call logging data). After I had been there some months I was asked to look at a problem a client had analysing their data. I ran the client and asked them if they could send me a copy of the data. Two days later I got a photocopy of the disc which just fitted on the paper. I thought it was a wind up until a colleague got a floppy folded in two to fit the envelope! :laugh: or :crying:

I must be getting old because if I think back of all the disks we used to have then I just think wow! How far have we come to the flash (usb) disks and external hard drives we are using today? Wow, wow!!!

1984 (no, not the one you're thinking about).

IBM PC

DOS 1.0 (sic)

First 360KB floppy disc.

Then 1.2MB floppy disc.

Then a little later I was able to buy and install a big board with a 24MB disc on it. I was speechless.

I remember hearing about the first 10 MB hard drive and was amazed. It seemed like we could store the whole world on it.

I also remember when the first 1 MB of RAM was available. I wondered why we would ever need that much in memory at once; we've always worked with 640 KB.

My, how times have changed.

I'm sure that scribes in ancient Egypt saw papyrus as an innovation over clay tablets. However, today most of what we know about Egypt comes from the clay tablets as the papyrus disintegrated over time.

Guess how many 360 K floppies it would take to backup a 1 TB database. Also try to guess how much time it would take if you had one guy sitting at the PC writing and swapping one disk at a time. :w00t:
