A Proof Of Concept doesn't have to be a mockup of the entire solution. For example, if I want to prove the concept that loading data into a staging table and then partition switching into the cumulative historical table is more efficient than bulk loading the historical table directly, then I can easily prove that concept (or assertion as we may call it) by developing and unit testing that small subset of the overall ETL process in development.
