When I try this in Sybase ASE, it returns this error message:

ERROR: Implicit conversion from datatype 'VARCHAR' to 'NUMERIC'

is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.

When I try it in Sybase IQ, it returns -19.461538, with no error message.
